Obie podobnie poddały się upływającemu czasowi, zamykając słuchacza na te kilka minut w świecie lat 90. Wychodzić się z niego nie chce, więc tym bardziej cieszy fakt, że wokalistka nie była otwarta na większe eksperymenty, budując kolejne utwory na brzmieniu żywych, tradycyjnych instrumentów. Wspomniane kompozycje “Why Didn’t You Call Me” i “Do Something” promowały “On How Life Is”, choć – i tu myślę, że żadnej osoby interesującej się muzyką nie zaskoczę – album dziś kojarzony jest przede wszystkim z “I Try”. To poruszająca, melancholijna piosenka, obdarzona w refren, który nie chce wylecieć z głowy. Ładnie przedstawia się także od strony lirycznej, zawierając w sobie najzwyklejszą prawdę – miłość przynosi radość, zaś jej brak ogromną wewnętrzną samotność. Dziś zapomina się o jeszcze jednym singlu – balladowym, bluesującym “Still”, w którym śpiewająca ciszej Macy opowiada nam historię toksycznego związku. To na pewno nie jest smutne zakończenie, lecz pełne optymizmu “do widzenia” (So long everybody (…) Hope I see you someday soon). Do słabszych momentów płyty należą ozdobione dęciakami, jazzujące “I Can’t Wait to Meetchu”, w którym Gray rzucając pojedyncze słowa kładzie refren; oraz spokojne, wiejące nudą “A Moment to Myself”. Podrygująca dziś na obrzeżach drugiej ligi muzycznych gwiazd amerykańska wokalistka Macy Gray zaliczyła pod koniec lat 90. debiut, który trafił do mnie dopiero wtedy, gdy uważniej się w niego słuchałam. “On How Life Is” właśnie do takiej grupy płyt należy – wymagających chwili uwagi. Inaczej sprawia wrażenie krążka nużącego, z którego na chwilę w głowie zostaną nam ze dwa refreny. Pierwszy album Gray zyskuje przy bliższym spotkaniu, szczególnie dobre wrażenie robiąc niegłupimi tekstami i tradycyjnym podejściem do muzyki ich autorki.
